Public Safety Alert Door to Door Scams
This summer we have seen an
increasing number of door-to-door sales without the
proper permits. We have received complaints on magazine
sales, book sales and the latest is home alarm system
sales. These are unsolicited door-to-door salespersons
using high pressure selling methods. They attempt to
collect personal data and fail to comply with Wisconsin
Consumer Protection laws. On August 6, 2007 we had four
complaints on magazine sales using high-pressure tactics
and selling without a permit. The Ashwaubenon Public
Safety Department is urging the community to be cautious
in dealing with individuals doing door-to-door sales of
any kind. The community is reminded:
• Be cautious of letting
any stranger enter your home for any reason.
• Ask for company or
organization ID.
• Request to see their
direct sales permit from the Village of Ashwaubenon.
• Do not give your
personal data such as social security or bank account
information to anyone that you did not initiate contact
with.
• Do not sign any forms
when you feel you are being pressured or intimidated.
• Report any suspicious
activity to police. If you feel threatened, call 911
immediately.
• If the person leaves
and you can safely get a license number and vehicle
description, give it to the Officer.
