Cheerleaders
Cited For Work At Recent Camp
Ashwaubenon Cheerleading squad attended a cheer camp at
Appleton North High School August 8 - 10th. At camp the cheer squad
learned many new cheers and stunts. During camp the Ashwaubenon
cheerleaders received many ribbons and a 1st place trophy for their
home cheer. The cheerleaders who attended the camp were Alease
Roberts, Jessica Martin, Faith Krause, Katie Spiering, Alex Noack,
Courtney Carlson, Taylor Pierce, Tiffani Pierce, and Chelsea Cooney.
Coached by Jill Pierce. Alease Roberts (Senior) and Taylor Pierce
(Freshman) received the All Star award at the cheer camp at Appleton
North High School. This award was given because of their knowledge
and execution of a dance and cheer that was taught during the camp.
Because of this award Alease has a chance to perform in London while
Taylor has a chance to perform in the Philadelphia Thanksgiving
Parade. The entire cheerleading squad is very proud of Alease and
Taylor.

Neighborhood Tree Planting Program
Offered
The Village of Ashwaubenon is once again
offering its Neighborhood Street Tree Planting Program for residents
to have trees planted along their residential streets. The
tree-planting program is a cost sharing partnership between the
Village and its residents to promote the benefits of tree-lined
streets.
Street trees are typically planted six feet
from the back of the curb and are only available to plant within the
Village right-of-way. The number of trees to be planted will be
based upon the presence of infrastructure (hydrants, utility poles,
overhead utilities, etc.), location and mature size of adjacent
trees and linear feet of street frontage. This fall interested
residents will receive a listing of suitable trees and an order
form. Planting of trees will be done in late October or early
November.
Any resident who would like to enjoy the
lasting benefits of planting trees will be accommodated on a first
come, first served basis. Interested residents are asked to call
the Parks, Recreation and Forestry office at 492-2331 before August
31st for inclusion in this growing program. |
Jaguars Hit Gridiron On August
24th
When you watch the Ashwaubenon Jaguars on the gridiron this year you
may have trouble keeping track of them. Head Coach Ken Golomski says
it is the quickness of
the
team that will be the squad’s strong point this year.
“The team is very quick,” said Golomski during a phone interview. He
cited quarterback Jody VanLaaen, Mike Taylor and defensive back Mike
Wick as some players that will be quick out of the block. But it
isn’t just the trio of players that gives the squad speed. Newcomer
to the squad Kevin Jolly, a track finalist at Ashwaubenon last
spring, joined the squad as a wide receiver, a position where speed
is a must. “Zak Savere anchors our offensive line. He is a big kid
but fairly fast,” Golomski
said.
When asked if anything surprised him when the students reported for
practice in early August, Golomski said it would be their work
ethic. “The kids are working hard,” he continued. His major concern
is depth where he says they have a slight weakness, but he believes
some of the other players will step up and take care of that
concern.
The Jaguars quarterback this year is Jody VanLaanen, who Golomski
calls an extremely athletic student. “This is a great showcase
position for his talents. He can throw and run well,” Golomski said.
The team will be leaving the old Bay Conference where Ashwaubenon
has joined Bay Port and DePere in dominating football. The new
league is the Fox River Classic Conference. “I would have preferred
to stay in the Bay,” said Golomski. “But we have played Green Bay
East, Southwest and have done all right. Notre Dame is always a very
strong ball team but so are Bay Port and DePere. With a new
conference it is hard for us to tell what’s going to happen, if we
were still in the Bay I could tell you that,” he continued. Golomski
said that Green Bay Preble had a very good scrimmage against D.C.
Everest. “I expect to see some competition from them,”
he
continued.
Under the new conference there are 12 teams. At first they were
going to be divided into two divisions, but they’ve changed that.
Since there are only 9 games you won’t meet every team in the
conference and one game will be a non-conference game. Ashwaubenon
meets Bay Port in their season opener but since that is one team
that they weren’t suppose to meet this year, that will be considered
non-conference game.
Golomski mentioned that this conference is supposed to be in
operation for a year or two when the WIAA may reshuffle things.
When it comes to the coaching staff there are a lot of familiar
faces. Golomski will be held coach assisted by Ed Krcmar, Jim Allen,
Rich Bessert, Pete Baganz and Chad Federman. New to the coaching
staff will be Tony Dollinger, Eric Baranczyk who played for the
Jaguars in the 1990-1991 and 1991-1992 team, and Nick Cochart will
be entering his third season coach for the Jaguars. Also new to the
coaching staff this year is Mike Raether who was recently hired as a
teacher at Ashwaubenon High School.
Golomski said he encourages all the fans to come back to the games
this year. “It makes a difference to the kids. They perform better
when people come out to watch them and we have a big crowd. We’ve
always done well at home and I think that’s part of it,” Golomski
concluded.
The first game will be played versus Bay Port today, Friday, August
24th at Goelz Field in Ashwaubenon. Kick off is at 7 p.m. and
tickets are available at the box office.
